<p>The day was sunny and warm but really breezy. We decided not to go back to CF 7 mile today but to just enjoy the day at the beach. We ended up renting wave runners and went for a 2 hour guided tour. The choppy water and my torn hands made for a really fun time. We cruised through  mangroves lined waterways and stopped for a short visit at Starfish Point. Stunning white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue waters. Then we went for some open water snorkeling before heading back to Rum Point. All that took us to 2 pm so after a quick lunch we drove back out to Starfish Point for some more swimming and hanging around.</p>

<p>Hopefully I haven&#8217;t bored you all with my recap of our visit to the Caymans. As much fun as I&#8217;m having I miss everyone back in the box so I feel connected by sharing our adventures with you.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So we just spent our first full day in the Caymans. The first stop in our plan for the day was to find the local CrossFit affiliate. The first one we found (there are 2 on the island) was CrossFit 7 mile. It is located a stones throw from Seven Mile Beach.</p>

<p>We showed up a half hour early and just killed some some time waiting for them to open up. The owner and head trainer ( Wanda) was great. She was very welcoming and stepping in to her small but perfectly appointed box felt like being home. We ended up taking the 10 am class. The runs things a little differently then we do. They post a warm up and you do this unguided. After that there was some skill work and then the wod. Todays wod was &#8220;Death by pull ups.&#8221; Diana and I both took class. The class was about 10 people and they had another visiting CrossFitter from CrossFit New England. Small world for sure.</p>

<p>They have a small courtyard outside the box to wod in and this sign was painted to remind people to dodge cars in the lot.</p>
<p>Diana ended up with 8 plus rounds scaled and I hit 12 rounds. I felt pretty good about that for a big guy. I ended up ripping my hands as did the guy from CFNE. As luck would have it our next stop for lunch was on a perfect white sandy beach so right after lunch we swam in crystal clear Cayman waters and the saltwater was perfect for healing torn hands.</p>

<p>We managed to get really lucky in that the cruise ships were not in this day so we had the beach pretty much to ourselves.</p>

<p>After the beach we headed up to a Sea turtle farm. I didn&#8217;t expect much but it was actually a great thing to do here. They raise and release thousands of sea turtles. There had to be over 100 turtles from a few months old to over 60 yrs old.We actually got to pick up some of the babyies and yearlings.We have a bunch of great pictures that I will post when we get back home.</p>
<p>After the turtle farm we hit the beach again to do some more swimming and then went to a great seaside restaurant for dinner called Macabucas. We plan on going back tomorrow to eat and then snorkel from there so I&#8217;ll post some pics of that on Facebook tomorrow night. That&#8217;s it for tonight. Tomorrow is another trip to CrossFit 7 mile, Macabucas and then another guided snorkel trip back at the resort.</p>

This morning as we caught our flight for vacation I picked up the Men&#8217;s Health and Fitness latest issue and there was bob Harper from the biggest Loser on the cover.</p>

<p>So I purchased it of course and it was a 5 or 6 page article about how &#8220;America&#8217;s Trainer&#8221; has fallen in love with CrossFit. The guy who admits he was once more of a cardio guy (think typical bootcamp style training) and now realizes he overlooked huge huge pieces of fitness . He Talk&#8217;s about how he used to laugh at the guys lifting weights and grunting and then says his team on the show is kicking ass because of his new focus on strength training.</p>

<p>This goes hand in hand with what we have been preaching to all of you for the past 4 years. If you are going to get into top fitness condition you must get stronger. This is in part why CrossFit works better than any other program when it comes to overall fitness. The use of progressively heavier weights in powerlifting and Olympic lifting movements makes you better at all things. It also helps shed fat faster. End result= look better naked.</p>
<p><strong>Those of you already employing a fitness professional have 1 of 3 things happening. The first is that they are not using CrossFit at all. This is stupid.Next they are  sneaking CrossFit methodology into your training and not telling you. This is dishonest. Lastly their excuse for not using CrossFit methodology is that it is dangerous and will hurt you. This is ignorant</strong></p>
<p>So what does america&#8217;s trainer have to say about his own personal experience since he started using CrossFit? Read Below.</p>

<p>So day by day we set about the business of making people radically fit. We held to our standards. We made sure our athletes performed movements safely and correctly. We asked them to ask more of themselves. To set their goals higher. We made sure that if you were considering joining our gym that you knew at the start it was a commitment.</p>

<p>Little by little we added a new athlete here and there. As more people joined the word went out in town. Then more people joined and brought their friends. After about 1 year we doubled the original size of the gym to 3000 sq ft. Added more equipment and more classes but all the while maintaining high standards.</p>

<p>Flash forward 16 months later and we are extremely excited to announce that we signed a new lease to move CrossFit 033 into a 7000 sq ft facility. This will be the gym we envisioned building when we first moved to town. Large enough so that we will never outgrow it. Not only will it have plenty of room to train in but there will also be two new bathrooms with showers and changing areas. Additionally we will also have a dedicated kids are with toys and games to keep your little ones busy if you need to bring them while you workout ( we do not offer babysitting).</p>

<p>New Space</p>
<p>The new space will be ready sometime between April and May. If you want to lend a hand with the painting and building of equipment just let us know. We will keep the barbecue hot and the beer cold while we do the buildout.</p>

<div>CrossFit may be coming out from the underground, but we aren’t leaving our garage gyms! Articles are popping up in main stream magazines trying to offer unbiased views and reviews of the craze. Articles always remark that our sense of community is astounding, with whole gyms banding together and forming families (of sorts) but then they always launch into the dangers associated with our workouts (WODs).<br />
The trouble with these articles trying to show you what it’s like “inside the cult” are that they are always written by a reporter,a reporter that tries CrossFit for a week. A workout or two is not sufficient<br />
time to understand us or our community. I, however, have been CrossFitting since early 2008. We started “dating” and I got my coaching certificate later that same year. In other words, I’m passed the honeymoon phase where everything’s shiny and new and perfect. This is my response to the many versions of the “<a href="http://health.yahoo.net/articles/fitness/inside-cult-crossfit" target="_blank">Inside the Cult of CrossFit” articles</a> that is realistic but still admittedly slightly biased (I’m still in love after all).</div>

cleans etc for twenty minutes. I can’t do real pull-ups yet, so I used a band on<br />
the pull-ups but I did ‘em! And my pushups are still pretty slow because they<br />
make you go all the way down to the floor, oh my gosh are my arms are gonna be<br />
so sore tomorrow hahahaha. I almost did 7 rounds though. It was<br />
awesome!”</div>

<div>To a CrossFitter, these types of conversations are all too common and can get very frustrating. For example, a friend of mine made it to the Games in 2011 (aka “the Olympics of CrossFit” ie “a BIG deal”) and could barely get his family to care. He may as well told them that he went to the library: they simply couldn’t comprehend that making it to the Games meant that he is one of the fittest people IN THE WORLD! People outside of CrossFit have a hard time understanding the astounding difficulty of our workouts and the high skill level required to execute certain movements (let alone execute them well and efficiently).  They simply aren’t used to the idea that an exercise program can include the common person, after all, aren’t true athletes famous and stuff?</div>
<div><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Respect</span></strong></div>
<div>It does break my heart a little whenever someone mentions that they need to get in shape before coming into our Box. That’s the biggest misnomer and I believe that along with the right coach on your side, CrossFit is the best place for a beginner to go. CrossFit aims to create highly functional athletes by evenly distributing it’s programming attention to ten physical skills; cardiovascular/respiratory<br />
endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.We believe that you are only as fit as you are competent in each of these ten skills. What does this<br />
mean for the beginner?  It means it’ll be really easy to impress me, all you have to do is really try. It means that I’m not impressed by the guy with muscles on top of muscles…I’m fairly certain his<br />
endurance will be non-existent.  It means I’m not impressed by the beginner with a 450lb deadlift…I simply think they have a big deadlift. It means that I’m not impressed by your 4-minute mile…I simply think that we have a lot of flexibility, strength and skill work to do. It means that I’m not impressed if you have the fanciest clothes and the cutest hair cut…I simply think you’re going to sweat in them just the same as in anything else. I’m also not impressed if you throw up during the workout…I simply think you ate too recently and aren&#8217;t yet accustomed to this kind of workout. <strong>What DOES impress me is if you come back! It does impress me if you keep working to the best of your ability, if you keep track of your workouts and strive to improve every time you walk through these doors. Genuine effort impresses me.</strong> Peeling yourself off the mat after a WOD to cheer on and support the others who haven’t finished yet impresses me. <strong>You don’t need muscles or a 4-minute mile to do these things. You need respect; respect for yourself and for others.</strong></div>
<div>Everyone that is a CrossFitter or is considering it should familiarize themselves with Teddy Roosevelt’s speech (portion of a speech anyway) known as “The Man in the Arena.” This describes the CrossFitter&#8217;s view of their training and the importance of every opportunity:</div>
<div><strong><em>“It is not the critic who counts;</em></strong><em> not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. <strong>The credit belongs to the man who is<br />
actually in the arena,</strong> whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because <strong>there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds;</strong> who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; <strong>who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat…”</strong></em></div>
<div>So it’s inaccurate to have a veritable outsider do one or two WODs and then declare they know what it’s like to be a CrossFitter. They simply cannot know what it’s like to be in the arena, over months and years, striving valiantly and taking failure along with triumphs and knowing they’ll never be among those who stayed “safe” on the middle road never realizing their potential.</div>
<div>When I read <a href="http://www.blogger.com/goog_1351448781">an article written by<strong> Grant Stoddard, “</strong></a><a href="http://health.yahoo.net/articles/fitness/inside-cult-crossfit" target="_blank">Inside the Cult of CrossFit<em>”</em> (I read it on Yahoo health</a>, but apparently was originally printed in Men’s Health Magazine) I knew I needed to<br />
comment. Read again Teddy Roosevelt’s speech above and then read this excerpt from Grant’s article about his experience during a workout. “It wasn&#8217;t just the intensity or the inappropriate competitive zeal that put me off CrossFit. The endless affirmations—all the clapping and grating exclamation points after &#8220;You&#8217;re doing a great job!&#8221;—brought out my inner misanthrope. The last straw came when I found myself in a class of 12, mostly women. They&#8217;d all finished, but I still had 3 sets to go. There&#8217;s something uniquely humiliating about trying to squeeze out a fifth round<br />
of 10 pullups, completely red-faced and fatigued, with a group of women yelling encouragement. I finished 2 minutes after my nearest rival, stumbled through a forest of high-fives, and then<br />
went out the door and never came back.”</div>
<div>It saddens me that what he found horrifying was that women not only beat him, but that they then SUPPORTED him. The NERVE of those ladies! What he didn’t realize was that <span style="text-decoration: underline;">they weren’t “women” condescending to encourage a “less-fit man” but that they were more veteran athletes supporting and encouraging a beginner.</span> Where is the shame or horror in this scenario? Essentially, he did not respect himself to take this as an experience and say, “wow, I have room for improvement. These folks are pretty well conditioned to have done that so fast.” I can only hope that he respected those women that high-fived him before he quit to say thanks for the support.</div>
<div>What I’d like you take away from this though is  that if you think you would have acted similarly, then we don’t want you. That’s right, WE DON’T WANT YOU here if you’re going to whine about the workout and not take action to improve. [While this may sound harsh, I mean it in more of a parental way rather than hateful.] WE DON&#8217;T WANT YOU if you&#8217;re going to cheat on the workout and do 8reps instead of the prescribed 10 reps. No one is perfect, we’ve all come in last before, we’ve all scaled a workout before (and will again most likely) and if you’re going to quit when the going gets tough then I don’t really want you on my team and part of our family. To whine incessantly, to cheat on the workout, to not really try, to disregard coaching advice; these are all ways in which you are showing disrespect to the others in your class, to your coaches, and most importantly to yourself. Don&#8217;t you want to be BETTER than that?!</div>

<div>CrossFit isn’t for everyone and for some people it just may not be the right time to start. Afterall, Zumba isn’t for everyone either and I’m not a bad person simply because the dance-exercise class doesn’t  give me a thrill. It is true though that workouts as difficult as ours can sometimes highlight insecurities. Another reason why having a supportive family dynamic here is so helpful: we’ve all had our experiences with this and can help you get through it, but you have to be ready to allow it to happen. For instance, I once was overcome by sadness and insecurities from a recent break-up<br />
during a WOD entitled “Air Force” causing me to burst out in tears and leave the room. No one ever quits a WOD (we’re all too motivated to finish and workouts are usually too brief to find a reasonable excuse to stop) let alone leave the room. Not being able to finish that day was a blow to the ego on top of everything I was going through. So yeah, sure, I could have been so embarrassed by that so as to not go back the next day, but you know what? There were zero repercussions, because it happens and we all get it. Today is today, tomorrow is tomorrow.  Just give it the best you can. Grant (above) never went back to his Box because it seems he was too embarrassed  and I can’t hate on him for being the person that he is at whatever point in his  life that he’s at. But maybe one day he’ll decide that he’s ready to walk back into a Box, to be part of a community and to give back to his teammates, at which time he’ll be warmly welcomed home.</div>

<div><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Is CrossFit Dangerous? </span></strong></div>
<div>While relevant, this is rarely covered in a  realistic manner. Addressed correctly it can be informational, but when the  commentary gets sensationalist I just ignore it. Bottom line is that everything<br />
can be viewed as dangerous, so don’t try to scare me with an outsiders view of some of our inside jokes (like Pukie the Clown). Recently  there was an article in the New York Times about the dangers of doing Yoga…<em>if you do it wrong</em>.  I also just read a blog post about the dangerous nutritional deficiencies that can result from eating lettuce….<em>if you eat nothing but lettuce</em>! Articles about the <a href="http://fitness.mercola.com/sites/fitness/archive/2011/03/22/beware--new-study-finds-too-much-cardio-can-hurt-your-heart.aspx" target="_blank">dangers of long-term long-distance running</a> pop up from time to time but are quickly brushed under the carpet, so to speak. I could twist an ankle in Zumba or sustain a meniscus tear, but where are the sensationalist articles about the dangers of Zumba?</div>
<div>The less-than-glamourous aspects of CrossFit that are usually highlighted are a condition known as rhabdomyolysis and the pseudo-mascot-if-you-will Pukie the Clown.</div>
<div><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Regarding Rhabdo</span><br />
Rhabdomyolysis (aka Rhabdo) is a condition in which skeletal muscle is fantastically damaged, leaching the cell contents into the bloodstream. Certain contents such as myoglobin are toxic and overwhelm the kidneys which can lead to  kidney failure and, in extreme  instances, death. This is bad, very bad and it is not worn as badge of CrossFit honor no matter what silly magazine article you are reading. An outsider may here someone joke about it, but I assure you it is not something anyone strives to “get”. One of my favorite parts of Grant Stoddard’s article (I have nothing against good ol’ Grant, but his article just highlighted all the things I dislike about mainstream CrossFit articles) was that he included the following as part of his argument trying to illustrate that CrossFit causes rhabdo.</div>
<div>&#8220;In January 2011, a local paper reported that 13 football players at the University of Iowa were hospitalized with rhabdo after a workout that included 100 squats with 50 percent of their 1-rep max.<br />
<strong>It wasn&#8217;t a CrossFit workout, </strong><strong>but it was in the same ballpark..</strong>.&#8221;If you look at what I highlighted for you, “it wasn’t a CrossFit workout.”  While there  may be some instances of rhabdo occurring as a result of a CrossFit WOD, other things can cause this condition as well (see the link below). However, it is a serious condition and if you are thinking about starting CrossFit I recommend<br />
that you take the foundations course that each location should offer. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">If you are coming from a competitive sports or military background, swallow your pride and take the foundations course also (in which each beginner is introduced to the basic movements).</span> Don’t try to skip it “because you know how to do this  stuff.”  You may feel like you’re ready to do the WOD as prescribed but scaling appropriately for the first few months or more enables your body to get accustomed to the high demand these workouts place on your system. A good coach will know how to do this. <div><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Regarding Pukie the Clown</span></div>
<div>I’m not a fan of throwing up, I really hate it a lot. I myself have never thrown up from doing a CrossFit workout and I’m sure there are some people out there that take that as a sign that I’m not hardcore enough. Whatever to them. The cases in which I have gotten nauseous are as follows:·<br />
First time I did a series of 250m sprints on the Concept2 Rower·<br />
Drank too much water before the workout·<br />
Ate too much right before the workout·<br />
Didn’t drink enough water and was dehydrated during the workout·<br />
Was coming down with the flu anyway·<br />
After the 1<sup>st</sup> WOD in the 2011 CrossFit Open</div>
<div>That’s it, in just about four years of CrossFitting I can count my run-ins with nausea on less than two hands and 3 out of 6 times it was due to improper fueling. As my body has adjusted to the intense workloads I rarely now get nauseous. Now it’s only during extreme heat or humidity during the summer that I can sometimes get woozy but that’s more of a sign to me to pay better attention to proper hydration than anything else.</div>
<div><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">My Social Club</span></strong><br />
We often joke that we could have just joined the local Portuguese Club in order to make friends. But no, this CrossFit is my social club. I get out of work, head over to the Box to hang out with my riends, and I just so happen to get a workout in also. I like it because of the variety; I don’t know what the workout will be so every day holds a surprise. I like it because I appreciate the challenge; some movements are complicated and require constant practice. I  like feeling successful; even if I scale a workout I have the success of having completed it to the best of my ability. I really believe that CrossFit brings out the best in people and gives us opportunities that our regular life at the office does not.  <span style="text-decoration: underline;">CrossFit is the great equalizer, enabling someone strong yet slow to match someone weaker but fast in a workout.</span> (I&#8217;ve come in behind a woman that was 8months pregnant in a sprint workout before. I&#8217;ve come in second to a 60 year old before. That&#8217;s beautiful!)</div>
<div>It also is unifying people around the world. You see someone in the airport with a CrossFit affiliate sweatshirt on and you can strike up a conversation, speak the same language “WOD, Fran, AMRAP”, and understand each other. Regional competitions are even a little like family reunions except that everyone ends up bruised, sweaty and gasping for breath at some  point.</div>
<div>Yup, we’re a little out there I suppose but I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. View each  website, speak with each one and try out a workout at the one that makes you feel the best. And if you don’t like it? Oh well, no hard feelings just..Good luck!</div>

I&#8217;ve  been coaching CrossFit for 4 years and I still find it hard to believe there are still people slaving away on treadmills, precors and stair masters for 30-60 minutes sessions. All for the goal of fatloss and some semblance of cardiovascular fitness. Hell even the bootcamp guys have figured out that monstructual cardio routines deliver less than optimal results.</p>

<p><strong>Steady state cardio ( work done typically at 65-75% of max capacity) is a recipe for mediocre fitness</strong>. Compound it with the fact that people tend to fall in love with one type of equipment or cardio and it gets worse. If you&#8217;re the type who is annoyed because someone took the last  Elyptical machine and you are now left with the recumbent bike I am talking to. You know you&#8217;re bored and you hate spending a near useless 30-60 minutes of very little sweating  while you watch the flatscreens at your local gym. Initially you got some results because you moved from a couch to actually moving your body. You might have even changed your diet a little. Now it takes more and more time on those stupid machines or endless long runs to deliver the same mediocre results.</p>

<p>There are plenty of studies done to butress the argument for short bursts of high intense exercise as a means of decreasing fat and improving fitness. Workouts that are continously changing and challenging your body in unfamiliar ways are proven to work better. Changing all the variables like type of exercise, rep schemes, rest periods (or lack of rest periods) , loads used and time domains trained in can help create exceptional results. Using strength training to elicit cardiovascular results will vastly improve your CV capabiltiy. I can tell you this. If you have ever done anything physically hard and all out for 2 or 3 minutes you can tell what your current program is lacking in instantly. If you never train the wide range of time domains 2,5,10, 15 minutes etc and at high intesnity  you are missing entire elements of fitness. Think 40 yard dash type of fitness and you get the picture.</p>

<p>If your current program doesn&#8217;t also include a serious and steady dose of real strength training ( not light weight kettlbells and 5 lb rubber dumbells) then your fitness will have glaring holes for sure. If you don&#8217;t care about real fitness and are only interested in the appearance of fitness the same rules apply. High intensity training couple with progessive strength training and clean eating will make you look better naked.</p>

<p>One more note..if your currently trying to lose 10,20 30 or more lbs and you are saying &#8221; I don&#8217;t want to be big or bulky&#8221; you are probably already bigger and bulkier than the women in this blog. This is not meant to offend you but wake you up to a certain reality. We want what you want&#8230;to make you really fit and to help you look better naked.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div>At 46 and 48 years old my husband Rick and I always felt we were in &#8220;pretty good shape&#8221;.  We had a membership to our local &#8220;globo gym&#8221; so we did work out on occasion.  Our work outs were boring and routine which made it easy to make excuses not to get to the gym. That all changed for the better when we heard about Crossfit.</div>

<p>We went to check out CrossFit 033 after hearing about it from Ricks cousin Ron.  He had joined CrossFit three months prior and had already lost over 20 pounds and said he &#8220;never felt better&#8221;.  My husband has had three knee surgeries in the past so we weren&#8217;t sure if he could participate at all.  He could not climb stairs due to his knees so how could he ever do these work outs?   We took our two sons Ryan (22) and Randy (18) with us to check it out.  We met Glenn and he gave us an introductory (very scaled) workout consisting of rowing, air squats and push ups.  All four of us quickly realized that we were NOT in the shape we thought.</p></div>

<div>We all committed to CrossFit on the spot.  It&#8217;s been 4 months since we joined and we are all noticing an increase in our muscle tone, strength and overall energy levels.  The Crossfit work outs are exciting, different, challenging and motivating.  We drive home after a wod (workout of the day) with an awesome feeling of achievement.  My husband walks right past the elevator now, and he can <span style="text-decoration: underline;">run </span>up a flight of stairs. His doctor credits CrossFit for giving him the ability to climb stairs again by strengthening the muscles all around the injured part of his knees.  We never thought that would be possible.</div>
<div>Doing CrossFit as a family has so many benefits.  My husband and I are so lucky to be able to spend this quality time with our boys.  We all discuss the daily wod, encourage each other to finish a tough wod or to reach a new personal record on a lift.  Crossfit has brought our family even closer together.</div>

<div>Merle and Glenn (owners) and all the trainers are great.  They scale the work outs to any ability while making sure that everyone is challenging themselves. They push you to be stronger than you ever thought possible.  You will find yourself achieving what you would never do on your own.</p>
<p>Recently my son and I both competed in the &#8220;Festivus 3&#8243; competition that was held for beginners.  It was amazing to be able to share this experience with my son.  Hearing him behind me cheering me on and being there to encourage him was awesome.  The people we have met through CrossFit are so supportive and inspiring..  It&#8217;s a whole community of friends that our whole family now shares.</p></div>

<p>Our athletes will compete in 3 lifts. The Bench Press, Deadlift and Squat. It should be noted that though this is a powerlifting competition we will not be following any strict santioned powerlifting set of rules. This is after all a CrossFit powerlifting competition. There will be a set of criteria/standards for each lift and they are as follows.</p>
<p>You have 3 attempts at each lift: bench,dead and squat.</p>
<p>Bench press: You will be allowed to have a spotter unrack the bar for you and return the bar to the rack once your lift is completed. You do not need to pause at the bottom of the press when the bar touches your chest but you do need to touch the chest. You also must fully lock out the lift on your own to be considered a &#8220;good lift.&#8221;  You butt must remain on the bench for the entire lift. If it doesn&#8217;t it will not be considered a good lift.</p>

<p>Squat: Very simply you must unrack the weight and have the hip crease dip below parallel and then stand to full extention without assistance. For those of you who will be squatting over 400 lbs we do have a monolift to limit your risk during the lift.</p>

<p>Deadlift: You must stand to full extention (open hips) with shoulders slightly behind the bar and you MUST control the bar to the floor for your lift to be considered valid. No dropping the bar from the top.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here is topic that needs to be revisted from time to time as new people find their way onto our website or join our gym. As CrossFitters we should all know that we need to not be dominant in any one of the 10 general physical domains. These domains include: speed, power, stamina, flexibilty, endurance, balance, accuracy, coordination, agility and strength. We want to, need to and do train all of these components in our box. Most people who join our gym are deficient in a number of these categories. Over time if you don&#8217;t avoid certain workouts then you will see all of these domains progress.</p>

<p>However, in my opinion the thing most people lack and women in particular is strength. For daily life in general most people are to weak. How much easlier does life get when you are not frail or don&#8217;t have to depend on others to do things you are to physically weak to do yourself. At one time in this country&#8217;s history the vast majority of people were &#8220;farm strong.&#8221;  They worked endless hours doing very hard physical things just to survive.</p>

<p>Then came modern conveniences and the ability  to survive without being physically challenged. Add to this the modern era definition of beauty and women became waifs. Every movie, fashion magazine and model became shining examples of what we like to call &#8220;skinny fat.&#8221;</p>

<p>Of course this isn&#8217;t restricted to just women as evidenced by the picture of the the guy above. To me this is very unattractive but more than that it is a sad way to walk through this life. Who wants to look like this? Who wants to walk through life weak and unable to live a life full of vitality? Why not live life like a lion/lioness?</p>

<p>What women wouldn&#8217;t kill to buy  a magical pill that made them a size 2-4 like the ladies above (I&#8217;m assuming thats what these ladies above are) but with muscles like this and more importantly the physical strength to do stuff like this?</p>

<p>What guy doesn&#8217;t want to look a little more like coach Doug in this picture? Strength provides your body wth a level of protection in all things. Sports and life.</p>
<p>The culture in our gym is one of strength. Our reputation in the Connecticut CrossFit community is that we are known &#8221; as the strong gym&#8221;. The bottom line is that if you want to be good at CrossFit and life in general then you need to get stronger. A lot stronger. So when you show up in our gym don&#8217;t bitch because you wanted to get in a &#8220;sweaty cardio &#8221; workout.  A good portion of the weekly wods are already dedicated to this. Hit the weights hard. Get your strength up to a respectable level. I&#8217;ll leave you with a quote from strength coach Mark Rippitoe.</p>
<p>&#8221; <strong>Strong people are harder to kill and more useful in general</strong>.&#8221;</p>
